Why Are These Democrats Enabling Trump’s Occupation of DC?
In one of many shameful and authoritarian moves, Donald Trump has been attempting to take away DC’s ability to self-govern.
Trump and Republicans like to pretend that this is about “crime,” but every action they have taken is making DC a less safe and welcoming place to live — as well as wasting public resources. And, simply, if Republicans wanted to combat crime in DC, they would be going after the White House first.
This week, House Republicans passed several anti-democratic bills to further remove DC’s ability to govern itself. I expect such behavior from Republicans, but what was disappointing is how many Democrat joined them.
8 anti-democratic Democrats joined Republicans in voting to enable 14-year-olds in DC to be tried as adults: Henry Cuellar (TX-28), Don Davis (NC-01), Laura Gillen (NY-04), Jared Golden (ME-02), Susie Lee (NV-03), David Min (CA-47), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03), and Eugene Vindman (VA-07). We already know that Trump thinks 14-year-olds are adults; there’s no reason for Democrats to, especially in the context of an attack on DC’s autonomy.
29 anti-democratic Democrats think that they deserve more say over DC police than any resident of DC does and want people to die in dangerous high-speed chases:
31 anti-democratic Democrats voted to give Trump and Congressional Republicans full control over DC’s sentencing laws:
At the very least, no Democrats voted for the bill to take away DC’s ability to appoint its own judges.
Our Democratic politicians talk about the threat Trump poses to democracy, and that threat is real and growing. So why is any Democrat collaborating with our increasingly unpopular president in hastening democratic backsliding?
